Travel features are generally handled in house, although freelances are welcome to put forward strong ideas to the magazine. Dirty Protest, UK Dirty Protest is a theatre company that strives to showcase new writing talent alongside well-known playwrights. Most events follow a format where six writers, including at least one novice, are given a topic on which to base a three to ten minute play. These are then performed by actors in no particular order in front of audiences of around sixty people in a laid back and intimate setting. Clare Hill is one of the group's organisers and hopes to hear from new writers who are interested in getting involved. As well as fresh talent they have also featured the work of award winning and established scribes such as Ed Thomas, Gary Owen, Tim Price and Helen Raynor, the latter of whom has worked on both Doctor Who and Torchwood. They have also worked with a variety of well known actors including Sharon Morris, who some will recognise as Angie, the psychology teacher from Skins. The company have recently been featured in the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff. In July they will be taking three plays to the music and theatre festival Latitude and will be putting on a Welsh night in the Wales Millenium Centre at the end of summer. They have been described by The Guardian as having a 'cracking line-up of new plays' and by Big Issue Cymru as 'spellbinding'. They are also keen to involve younger audiences and have performed for and worked with colleges and universities. Established writers should e-mail dirtyprotestl@hotmail. co.uk with details of their previous credits, while new writers should send examples of their work.

Kos Expat NewsMag, Greece/UK Andy Macintosh and Mary Burdis have launched a new publication for expats living in Kos, Greece. Kos Expat NewsMag (also affectionately known as KEN) features news, letters, poetry and articles covering subjects such as gardening, mythology, history, Greek language classes and expat profiles. The magazine is the only one of its kind, as Mary explained: 'Here on Kos the only 'local' English language paper we have is the Athens News, which, as the name suggests, is about Athens. "The only time Kos would get space was if a really big story broke here, like a Turkish invasion or a plague! We remembered what it was like when we first came here, when we didn't know how to do things and didn't know who to ask. So, [this is] a publication that would give this kind of information.' Creating and miming the magazine has provided a fun challenge for the team, and Mary says that she now sympathises with editors. Legal difficulties meant that rather than selling for a set price they could only ask for 'donations' to the magazine or they'd be forced to register as a business. 'Although we hadn't asked, many people made a monetary contribution towards the first issue and we collected the princely sum of €13, which we immediately ploughed back into the NewsMag by buying a ream of paper and some new batteries for the digital camera. 'We had a lot of interest and received many e-mails telling us how much the first issue had been enjoyed and we've revised the layout a little since then and have included several new features. Andy now writes a column from 'our roving reporter Aled Chudleigh' and I do a similar one from 'Shirley Knott'. 'We have plans to start a monthly competition, short story, limerick; that sort of thing, with a possible prize of free drinks at a bar, maybe moving up to €10. We are hoping to achieve a distribution of around 100, which we think is realistic'. They are happy to receive contributions from fellow writers but they should make contact first with a query.
